Omlouvám se, že jde o týden starou zprávu, ale dříve jsem ji nezaregistroval. Ve věku 86 let zemřel 8. září generál Israel Tal, tvůrce, podle některých lidí, jednoho z nejlepších tanků na světě Merkava. Narodil se v roce 1924 a spoluzakládal izraelské síly. Do důchodu odcházel z postu zástupce náčelníka generálního štábu.
Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, the forum of the general staff, senior commanders, regular and reserve soldiers all saluted Tal for his work, legacy, and contribution to the security of Israel over the many years. „The image of a legendary warrior and commander, who helped lay the foundations of the IDF armored corp and developed the Merkava tank, one of the world’s best tanks, has left us this morning,“ Ashkenazi said… „Talik wrote the golden pages of the magnificent, but bloody, history of Israeli security. His personal and unique contribution to the defense of Israel cannot be measured. May his memory be blessed.“
Přátelé o Talovi hovořili jako o „panu obrněném“. Nejvíce jej proslavila už zmiňovaná Merkava, která je konstruovaná tak, aby osádka byla v co největším bezpečí – motor je vpředu a slouží jako „pancíř“ a lidé v případě zásahu mohou uniknout zadní částí tanku.
Pattonovo muzeum jezdectva a obrněných sil ve Fort Knoxu Tala jmenovalo jako jednoho z pěti nejlepších velitelů obrněných jednotek historie. Kromě Tala jsou v pětici ještě generál George Patton, generál Creighton Abrams, německý polní maršál Erwin Rommel a Izraelský generál Moše Peled.

Tal became the commander of Israel’s southern front during the surprise Egyptian and Syrian attack on the Jewish state in 1973 on its holiest day, Yom Kippur – the day of atonement.

The former Major General eventually reached the portion of deputy IDF chief of staff and the commander of Israel’s southern front against Egypt in the final stages of the Yom Kippur War.
In one famous incident Tal, as commander of the southern front, refused an order by then IDF chief of staff David Elazar and defense minster Moshe Dayan to engage Egyptian forces after the war had ended, insisting on receiving authorization from then prime minister Golda Meir and the Supreme Court.
While Tal eventually won the argument, the incident virtually eliminated Tal’s chances of being nominated chief of staff after Elazar stepped down in the wake of the report by the Agarnat commission, which investigated the conduct of Israeli political and military officials during the war.
