Historie kamufláže je dlouhá, nicméně dá se říct, že zvířata v ní byla vždy lepší než člověk. Polní uniformy až do 20. století neposkytovaly vojákům příliš pohodlí a krytí – většinou nesplývaly s terénem. Bojovníci si také sice pomalovávali tváře, ale většinou šlo spíše o nahánění hrůzy než maskování a dělo se tak u kmenových šarvátek a nočních přepadů. Skutečnou změnu přinesla až první světová válka.

„It is a wonderful opportunity, this game of hokus-pokus,“ the New York Times mused in a 1917 Op-Ed about the newfangled concept of „camouflage,“ borrowed from the French word camoufler, „to disguise.“ Just two years earlier, France had established the world’s first military team dedicated to stealth attire, after a crushing defeat at the hands of German troops convinced French generals that their armed forces should forgo their stylish white gloves and pantalons rouges for a more muted look.

Nyní vědci vyvinuli nový make-up pro příslušníky amerických ozbrojených sil. Pomáhá nejenom při zakrývání tváře, která dokáže pokazit i skvělý maskovací efekt polní uniformy, ale vojáka ochrání i před teplem z výbuchu do 600 stupňů Celsia a před obtížným hmyzem. Novou formuli maskování na tvář na bázi silikonu vytvořili vědci z University of Southern Mississippi pod vedením Roberta Lochheada.

Dr Lochhead and colleagues set out to find a material that soldiers could smear on their faces like suntan lotion yet protects against heat far hotter than the rays that normally reach the skin. The formulation they discovered lasts far longer than a normal two second blast, generally providing protection for up to 15 second – and 60 seconds in some tests – before its own temperature rises to the point where a mild burn could occur. The finding raises the possibility that other professions exposed to intense heat, such as fire fighters, could also use a colourless version.
